[Discussion] New player with some questions about the game
As per topic, I've finally decided to hop into ESO after postponing it for quite a bit. As I've been active Redditor for quite a while (and because I need to wait a few days still before I get to play!) I decided I might as well ask for some advice here before I start my journey.
Before the questions, a small bit on my MMO background. TL;DR for the lazier readers below.
My first real touch with MMOs was, unsurprisingly, World of Warcraft: I took part in the original beta and played the game until early-ish Cataclysm. I raided with 7/10 pre-Pandaria classes to some degree, including tanking with all four tank classes and healing with all healers. Played on PvE server(s) mostly, never really got into PvP much.
Dabbled in Warhammer Online, but dropped it after the free month because the game was simply too unfinished to keep playing. Mostly played Black Orc. Loved the low level PvP in this one.
Tried Tera, but despite stunning visuals and decent combat system, felt the game lacked something. Did some early game questing mostly until I got dragged by friends to play...
Star Wars: The Old Republic. This game turned out to pretty much be WoW in Star Wars skin, with some downgrades like the odd decision to remove auto-attacks in favour of filler-abilities. Mained Jedi Guardian, i.e. Jedi tank.
TL;DR: No matter what MMO I play, I tend towards the tanks and healers. I tend to have plenty of alts, mostly to try all flavours of the above roles. I've tried several MMOs, with only WoW lasting more than few months.
What I know & have decided thus far about ESO:
Getting (one of?) the versions that gives access to any race (except Imperial?) in any faction. I have two people I'm joining to play with, so I want to play the same faction without being restricted in my choice of race.
My favorite character concept in Skyrim was Mage-in-Plate. One of the very reasons I was interested in ESO was that I heard that it is possible to tank content as mage-in-plate. As such my main will - at least initially - be an attempt to achieve just this: sorcerer tank.
Lastly, the questions!
MMOs tend to have noob-traps of varying degree. Any particular ones I should be aware of in ESO?
From the little I've read up thus far, I've figured that I will be needing to pick up at least sword & board fighting, heavy armor and storm calling. What other stuff should I look for?
Looking at esohead skill calculator, you have 7 armor pieces that you can distribute between light, medium and heavy armor. I remember reading a suggestion that one should go for 5/2 heavy/light split... What are the trade-offs here?
I've initially been thinking about making my sorcerer a Breton, but I'm always open for other race suggestions, outside Imperials which I won't be getting my hands on. Pros/cons? I've checked the racials, but they don't really say much without context. I.e. in WoW tanking everything was much more important than in SWTOR where you only really needed to tank the big hitters while DPS clear the mooks, threat in vanilla WOW was more important than post tBC etc.
Towards the end I used tons of add-ons for WoW. From what I understood, ESO has plenty of this stuff too. Anything you consider must-have?
Any other useful stuff I should know about but am too much of a newbie to ask?
